A bettor profited close to $500,000 on the ouster of Nicolás Maduro just before it was officially announced, sparking debate about the possibility of profiting from inside knowledge of American actions.

Changing Odds in Predictions

Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that Nicolás Maduro would be removed from office by the close of the month rose in the hours before former President Trump announced on Saturday that Maduro had been seized.

A single trader, which joined the platform last month and made four bets, all on political events in Venezuela, profited a total of $nearly half a million from a initial bet of over $32,000.

The identity is unknown. This unidentified trader had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Announcement

Platform data shows that traders estimated the likelihood of the president's removal at just under 7% in the midday period of Friday, January 2nd.

Yet these probabilities had climbed to over 10% by shortly before midnight and surged in the morning of Saturday, suggesting a sudden change in market sentiment just before the public announcement was made.

"This particular bet has all the hallmarks of a bet based on non-public details," said an industry expert.

Several of other traders also earned tens of thousands of dollars from similar wagers.

Political Attention Grows

Some lawmakers are starting to take note.

A new rule put forward on the start of the week would prevent government employees from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a bet.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Forecasting platforms have surged in popularity in the United States, with participants able to bet on everything from sports to politics.

Prediction markets were examined under the last presidential term. But it has received a warmer welcome during the current presidency.

Trading on insider information is a crime in the securities markets, but there are fewer regulations in the event betting space.

A spokesperson for Kalshi said their site "has clear rules against such activities of any form."
