Users Coming Off Weight-Loss Injections Put On Weight Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People purchasing such medications should be informed of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with other pills.

Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the way of the jabs explains the amplified rebound.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this medication leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Condition?

Health authorities advise the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Testimonies

People who have come off the medication report a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you become starving," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is compounded if users have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Significant Interest

Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is greater among women than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success likely depends on combined behavioural management.
